Modification method and principle of hexagonal boron nitride thermal conductive particles

Hexagonal boron nitride powder surface modification refers to the surface treatment, modification and processing of particles by certain methods. To change the physical and chemical properties of powder surface to meet the requirements of hexagonal boron nitride powder processing and Application.Powder surface modification is also called surface modification and surface treatment. Before that, there were many methods to classify the powder surface modification, including chemical method, mechanochemical method, physical method, etc.

Physical treatment generally refers to the surface modification of powder without surface modifier, including electromagnetic wave treatment, neutron flow, irradiation treatment of some jet particles, ultrasound, heat treatment and electrochemical treatment, plasma treatment, etc. For example, irradiation can change the surface texture and charge properties of powder particles , generate holes and defects on the surface, aggravate the surface heterogeneity of particles, change the surface energy state, and thus change the wetness of the particle surface. Polymer film can be formed on the surface of powder by plasma modification of polymer gas. The principle is to use plasma polymerization technology to activate organic compound monomer to form gas-phase free radicals. When gas phase free radicals are adsorbed on the solid surface, surface free radicals are formed. For example, it polymerizes with the original gas-phase monomer or the derived monomer produced in plasma on the surface to form high molecular weight polymer film.

Chemical treatment includes surface coating and surface chemical modification.

Surface coating treatment refers to coating the treatment agent on the surface of powder particles to reach the surface by means of certain technology. The purpose of modification can be divided into solid phase coating, liquid phase coating, microcapsule coating and other means.

1. Solid phase coating method: usually refers to the two substances which have no viscosity and chemical reaction at room temperature the surface modification can be achieved by coating one or more substances on the surface of ultra-fine powder with a certain treatment.

2.Liquid phase coating: coating the powder in liquid phase by chemical method. Ordinary liquid phase coating is to layer the surface of ultrafine powder with metal oxide, metal, polymer and other unconventional modifiers. The chemical modification of the powder particles by liquid phase chemical method is characterized by graft polymerization and emulsion polymerization. Grafting polymerization is to pre-transplant some groups onto the surface of ultrafine powder, which can participate in the polymerization or play an initiating role, or stop the polymerization, and then add monomers and promoters to carry out the polymerization.

3.Microencapsulation: the encapsulation of a solid, liquid or gas in a natural or synthetic polymer material. A core-shell structure with a diameter of less than a few hundred microns and up to a thousand microns is formed. The key to microcapsule preparation lies in the film formation of the encapsulated core, sometimes the film must be solidified. There are 4 ways to prepare microcapsules: interfacial polymerization, physical mechanical, phase separation, emulsion solvent evaporation. Microcapsule coating of ultra-fine heat conducting particles is the use of microcapsule technology to layer an organic film on the surface of the powder, which changes the surface properties of the powder. The coating effect of this method is uniform and the coating efficiency of other coating methods is relatively low. Most microcapsules are covered by the wet process, although the effect is good, but the solvent is wasted and the cycle is long; while the dry microcapsule coating is relatively low cost, it is suitable for industrial production, and it is worth studying and improving.

The surface modification methods of powder by various surface treatment agents are collectively referred to as surface chemical modification. This method is the most widely used method of surface modification of ultrafine powder. It mainly uses the surface treatment agent and powder particles for adsorption and chemical reaction to achieve the purpose of powder surface treatment.
